Being at Conference is a bit like being at Glastonbury. Bear with me!
There are always too many interesting fringe events and never enough time to see them all. Numerous 'gigs' will clash on timings, and despite all your time and effort planning, you'll miss some you really ...wanted to see and catch others that you never intended to. You can be disappointed with 'stars' you've idolised forever and dazzled by others you've never rated. You'll see super fans, protesters and the odd casualty of the bar who has clearly peaked too soon. The food and drink will be overpriced and the queues for the toilets will be long. But there the comparison ends as those at Conference are always very sparkling!

Here is a round up of fringe events I managed to attend at Conference '25 on your behalf...
Turning the Rising Green Tide hosted by Labour List, Hold Fast Labour
A Coalition of Pessimism: Who Is Switching Their Vote To Reform And How Can Labour Win Them Back? hosted by HOPE not hate and Thompson Solicitors
Labour Rural Reception hosted by Fibrous & Liquid Gas UK
Coastal PLP Annual Conference Reception
Cats Protection Cat Night: Cat Chat Over Cocktails hosted by Cats Protection
Building Futures: Rebuilding Trust With Young People. The Role of Trusted Adults As Someone To Lean On And Connecting People To The Right Support hosted by Youth Futures Foundation
How Can We Deliver The Social Housing We Need To Generate Economic Growth And Tackle The Housing Crisis? hosted by New Statesman, National Housing Federation, G15 And Joseph Rowntree Foundation
Dip At The Docks; The Conference Swim hosted by Surfers Against Sewage, Paddle UK and Swim England
Masculinity and the New Politics of Discontent: Will Young People Vote for Reform UK? hosted by HOPE not hate and IPPR
Inseparable Challenges: The Scarring Cycle of Youth Unemployment and the Growing Crisis in Young Peoples' Mental Health hosted by Youth Futures Foundation
Can Labour Win back The Working Class? hosted by Morning Star
Holding Onto The Heroes: How Labour Wins in 2029 hosted by SME4Labour and JL Partners
I've met MP's, Dame's and Secretaries of State.
I've voted, questioned, complained and cajoled.
Taken selfies, sung karaoke and swum in a dock.
Most importantly I've made a lot of connections, gained a lot of insights and am coming back to Torridge and Tavistock with a lot of new ideas on how we can build community and cohesion going forward.
Come to our next meeting to find out more. Members will be notified via email so make sure you have your email subscriptions up to date.

Your delegate’s feedback from day one at Labour Conference 25

The first 24 hours in Liverpool have been full of positivity.

The day started with a South West Regional delegate's briefing. We were briefed by our Regional Manager, Tom Phipps who explained the voting ...procedures and Claire Hazelgrove, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, on what to expect from conference and how best to navigate it all. The best part of the meeting though was getting to meet and network with the delegates from our neighbouring constituencies. I hope to foster these relationships so that we can encourage each other and campaign together in future elections.

Armed with our voting packs and reports we all then adjourned to the main hall for the opening of conference. The mood in the hall was of buoyed expectation when the Prime Minister and his team took to the stage. Liverpool Labour Leader, Liam Robinson opened the conference and introduced Kier Starmer,

"Social Justice is at the very heart of what our Party and our movement stands for And Social Justice is in the very DNA of this City So that’s why this City expected our Government, Our Government, to deliver the Hillsborough Law in full, and we’re really pleased that that is what our Government is doing. On behalf of this City I want to thank Keir for keeping his promise..."

Kier then introduced us to Charlotte Hennessey, daughter of Hillsborough victim Jimmy Hennessey and prominent campaigner for justice following the disaster, who made an impassioned speech about the long campaign for justice for the '97 and thanked Kier for his efforts in driving this legislation through.

This was followed by the Conference Arrangements Committee Report and the Labour Party Reports. As delegates we had to vote today on which emergency motion topics we wanted discussed. We were to pick 7 of the 42 options given. The topics I voted for on your behalf were:

Rural and Coastal Communities
NHS Dentistry
Water
Skills and Apprenticeships
School Absenteeism
Travel
Menopause

Tonight I will be attending the Coastal PLP Annual Conference Reception where I hope to meet fellow delegates from other coastal regions to discuss how we clean up our seas. I'll let you know how I get on....
